Thanks for posting Penny Marie. If you go to Ian Wishart's FB page, 24 Jan 2026, you will see the real record rainfall. It was on 18 May 2005 and was 347mm (NIWA data). The rainfall on 22 Jan 2026 was 274mm. The soil was considerably less prone to erosion in 2005 and now we know why. Very sad outcome and my heart goes out to those who've been affected by this.
I think there will have to be an investigation but they will try to restrict the terms of inquiry so that only the council is at fault. The inquiry will be restricted to council failures.
Another Maorification accidental death waiting to happen, this one at Oke Bay for trampers to Cape Brett. The track has been re-routed from a safe track to a dangerous one.
